Daniela Niederer is Nora En Pure, the indie dance and deep house sensation behind such tracks as ‘Come With Me’, ‘True’, and remixes of Oliver Heldens and Paul Harris. Growing up in Switzerland but with roots in South Africa and heading to Australia this week on tour, we couldn’t wait to get to know this well-travelled chick a little better.

Hi Daniela, where are you in the world right now?
I just came back from Brazil and will have one day at home in Zurich to wash my clothes and pack again for Australia!

Leaving South Africa for Switzerland at a young age, what were your musical influences growing up?
I miss being in the wilderness and in that beautiful nature. Ever since we moved I have always travelled a lot and I think that is what influences my music quite a bit. Regarding genres, I pretty much listened to everything. From classical music in very early stages, to rock and grunge later and even hip-hop before electronic music.

How did the move into house music come about? Was it natural for you?
In my family nobody ever really appreciated house music (including me!) We were more into real bands and instruments… But then I ran into friends who had their own studios and opened my eyes. I wasn’t aware before how experimental you can be, how “real” the music can sound. I wanted to know more and more about it and started playing around myself.

Where does the name Nora En Pure come from? What does it symbolise for you?
I just needed a name back then, I wasn’t sure what would ever happen with this music so I just chose one. It should be something short but still special in case it would ever turn out into something bigger. And now I’m grateful I chose this name, as it’s unique. There’s nothing in the world that has this name.

All of your releases are made for summer, so what do you have in store for your Australian audiences as they head into the warmer months?
Yes, most of my releases are very warm, melodic and positive. My main aim though is always to create a certain atmosphere, whether for summer or winter. But I guess having all these warm countries in my mind, they always turn out summery! It sounds as if they fit just perfectly to my upcoming Australia tour…

How can someone in the crowd grab your attention?
I try to often look into people’s eyes when playing. If I see they are having fun it makes me super happy. However seeing them on their phones, even if it’s taking pictures or filming, it’s less nice. I think most DJs would prefer for their audience to dance and enjoy it, rather than being caught up on their phones.

What lessons and experiences have you taken from playing on stages at Ultra Music Festival and Mysteryland?
The U.S is quite different from Europe and the rest of the world when it comes to club music. I feel they mostly wanna have a good party, an energetic set. My music however is quite chilled so I had to find ways how to present my music in a way that keeps them busy! Also, the set times at these big festivals are only one hour. So you have to plan your set very well to make sure everything you want to play fits into one hour.

You’ve seen massive support from Pete Tong, Tiesto and Sam Feldt; is there anyone in the industry you particularly look up to? Whose success would you wish to emulate?
I don’t really compare myself to others or look up to other people. I rather like to be inspired. When it comes to success, I stopped comparing myself as it can easily drag you down instead of pushing you for more (at least in that instant). You can easily end up in self-doubt and insecurity. For a long time, I just went with the flow as I am a very chilled person. But then people around me pushed me to set some personal goals and that’s a good thing. But I keep my eyes on my own path.

How and where will you be spending New Year’s Eve?
That’s still in the stars. There are several options and my management is still talking. I don’t want to know until it’s certain…

If you could make one thing happen in 2016, what would it be?
Touring is the most awesome thing ever but sometimes you miss important things between family and friends. In 2016, there will be a couple of important family events. So I pray that they don’t fall on the same dates as important festivals or club tours, because then it’s really tough to decide!
