Paul Gilsenan Art Exhibition – Dark Side Of A Softy – Thursday 4th October – Sunday 21st October
‘Dark Side of a Softy’ has been nearly seven years in the painting. After many years of constant exhibitions, Sydney-based artist Paul Gilsenan took the opportunity to dedicate greater time to evolve his painting style. As gallery co-director Alasdair Nicol explains, “You still have the beautiful seas of colour, but now he’s integrating his gorgeously engaging line drawing to explore a deeper narrative.”
This exhibition opens 4th October at 107 Projects in Redfern and is the result of a depressive headspace and heartbreak. It’s a journey through the dark side and explores the havoc it can wreak in any person living today.
But the paintings aren’t bleak. Gilsenan paints large-scale canvases full of highly addictive and lovingly rendered colour. Captivated by these seas of colour, the narrative that’s woven in – the dark side – presents in a gentle way. A way that allows seriousness to be fittingly engaged.
Gilsenan is also known for his alter-ego, Duckman, a cartoon character with the whimsy of a Leunig who is happy to traverse the edgier sides of contemporary life. Duckman has most recently been seen in the successful multi-media and hip hop project, ‘Sketch the Rhyme’ live shows, as well as various murals around Sydney.
