Drop Bear Adventures rally round to Save The Fraser Island Dingo
Drop Bear Adventures, 4wdriving tag-along tour operator on K’gari (better known as Fraser Island), aim to deliver, not only, outstanding guest experiences but also work passionately to support the preservation of the paradise island and all that inhabits it.
K’gari is the traditional Butchulla (Aboriginal) name of the island and Team Drop Bear go above and beyond to ensure every guest has an immersive experience in history and culture, glorious flora and fauna, in addition to wicked adventures! Imagine diving into aqua blue waters, feeling soft white silica sand between your toes and drinking from crystal clear fresh water creeks! It’s most definitely a highlight of Queensland and in fact, we dare to say it, the whole of your East Coast Australian adventure!
Fraser Island Dingo
Situated, 300km north of Brisbane, off the Sunshine Coast, K’gari is the world’s largest sand island. With a unique ecosystem combining thick rainforest, scrubland and great sand dunes it is home to some of Australia’s most wonderful creatures, most notably the Dingo.
The Fraser Island Dingo has significant conservation value to the island not only for it being now the purest breed of Dingo in Australia, but also for its role within this unique ecosystem. As an apex predator their role at the top of the food chain is vital to maintain a healthy balance for K’gari’s natural environment.
A Dingo’s natural diet is made up of small mammals, vegetation, reptiles, birds and fish. However with the increase in tourism and people visiting the island they have become notorious for trying to scavenge an easy feed. This activity has unfortunately had a detrimental impact on their population especially if a negative interaction between a person and a dingo occurs, meaning that more often than not the dingo will be culled.
In 2015 it was estimated that there was a stable population of 162 dingoes, in 19 packs. However some conservationists fear that the count is now below 100, this seeing a huge decline since the some 300 dingo population in 1990’s.
Fraser Dingo Watch
In partnership with a number of other operators and conservationists, Drop Bear Adventures are spearheading the way forward in trying to maintain the presence of this beautiful mammal on the island. Through their own Instagram ‘Fraser Dingo Watch’ programme they encourage all visitors to the island to share photos and details of dingoes that are spotted during their visit using the #fraserdingowatch
So if you are looking for a tour of K’gari, with a difference, a Drop Bear Adventure is the only way! Caring not only for your own unique experience, they spend much time working with the island to ensure it maintains all its’ beauty and what attracts you to stay. With both a 2-day Beach House Tour and a 3-day Wilderness Camping Tour be prepared for the adventure of a lifetime!
