In order to get from the Whitsundays to Fraser Island, you’ll need to start your journey from Airlie Beach – the main town on the mainland where Whitsundays tours depart from – to Hervey Bay – Fraser’s nearest mainland town.
Drive From Airlie Beach to Hervey Bay
The drive from Airlie to Hervey Bay takes around 12-14 hours, so most people tend to break the drive up over 2 – 3 days, meaning you can do a bit of sightseeing along the way. If you’ve got your own wheels and time to kill then you can totally take the journey at your own pace.
Flying From Airlie Beach to Hervey Bay
Not the most budget friendly option, but a great one if time is off the essence. You can either fly from Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays or travel to Proserpine which is around 45 minutes from Airlie Beach. However, there are no direct flights, so you’ll have to fly to Brisbane and get a connecting flight to Hervey Bay.

Take the Bus From Airlie Beach to Hervey Bay
There are a couple of bus companies that travel between Airlie Beach and Hervey Bay, (Greyhound or Premier Bus Service). Perhaps the most budget friendly mode of transport, the trip will take around 12 hours, or if you get a hop on hop off service you could split the trip up and see a few more sights along the way.
Taking the Train From the Whitsundays to the Fraser Coast
There are a few different routes you can take if trains are your preferred method of transport. The most cost effective way is the Spirit of Queensland route as it combines bus travel meaning you can get to Hervey Bay from Airlie Beach without too much fuss. Again, you’ll need to start off in Proserpine, and this route will take around 12 hours, but don’t worry as there’s a dining cart and bar on board, so you can sip a beer as you take in the stunning scenery along the way.
