Sarah McLeod

The ex-SuperJesus lead singer has just signed up as a Harley Davidson ambassador, as well as heading around the country for a blockbuster tour. She called BBM’S IMOGEN HARGREAVES to discuss.
You’re the new Harley ambassador, when did you first become interested in bikes?
I know! How great is that? Well, I’ve been riding bikes since I was about probably eight, I got a little PeeWee 50 and I gradually just sort of went, each time I got a new bike I just got bigger and bigger and bigger and now I’m riding Harleys. It doesn’t get any bigger than that!
Where’s your favourite place in the country to ride?
You know, probably in Adelaide Hills. I love riding in the Adelaide Hills, because the corners aren’t as tight and it’s really picturesque. It’s so beautiful up there and when you go to a corner, especially when you’re on a cruiser, you can see right to the other side, the end of the corner.
With your upcoming tour, what are you most excited about?
At the moment I’m happy to be playing an instrument again. I’ve been doing a lot of gigs of singing in clubs, singing remix versions of my songs, so I haven’t actually gone out on the road and done a proper national tour for about five years. I’m just really excited to be a proper musician again.
You’ve been involved in a huge range of different musical styles; do you have a favourite style or genre you like to work on?
I think that’s my problem, I really don’t, I love them all equally. I love doing dance music, I love doing rock music, I love doing acoustic music, I’ve just started learning how to play the piano so I’m getting into doing piano stuff. I just really love music, and to me, because I do it so much, to play the same style of music all the time would be sort of stale, and I have a very short attention span so I’m upping the anti with myself so I can remain interested in it. I think I’ll always be like that, I’ve got musical terrets. I don’t really have a favourite, I love them all equally.
How has the public responded to the different styles you’ve experimented with?
Actually really well, I think that so far I have a pretty loyal fan base that seems to be quite accepting of whatever I do, and I think it’s because my voice is still pretty recognizable and my voice is always rock. I don’t ever really try to sing any different, I’m a rock singer through and through. I sing rock style over all these different styles of music. Sometimes I try to do different character knick knacks but pretty much I can’t really change my style. There’s always that common thread, so people have been quite accepting of whatever I do because even though the beats underneath change it’s still me.
Do you miss being part of a band or do you enjoy working more independently?
I miss being on the road with a group of guys, cause they’re like a sweet little family.
