Sneaky Sound System Interview

Follow us on Google News
Sneaky Sound System is one of the greatest Australian bands of all time, with  their hit debut album reaching triple platinum heights back in 2006. Now, they’re back with a  fresh new single, ‘I Ain’t Over You’. We caught up with the band and asked them some sneaky questions…

Hey guys, thank you for taking the time to chat to us today! How are you right now?

Angus: We are pretty damn good to be honest. It’s been a cracking summer and we’ve got a good feeling about the rest of this year. Spirits are up!!

What made you last year return to your dance music roots, putting out house stormers like Summertime Madness?

A: We’ve hosted and DJ’ed and sung at our weekly club night Sneaky Sundays for over 15 years now….it’s proper house music with smatterings of techno and disco, but it’s a club vibe all the way. It’s like our base, our home, our happy place. The thing is both Connie and I are both musicians and writers and we’re suckers for sweet chords, classic pop songs, proper lyrics and we’re always writing them. Its a craft and nailing a great song os a tricky thing but we love it. So in one corner we have our sweet but difficult friend the pop song and in the other, the ever reliable and always loveable house loop. We did Summertime Madness in 1 day from start to finish – it was very cleansing. We plan to release more later in the year.

Connie you have lent your vocals and lyrics to albums from superstars Jay-Z and Kanye West, who would you say is the most inspiring artist you’ve worked with?

Connie: I find I’m more inspired by producers in a technical sense but the most inspiring would be Angus McDonald – he never stops and always looks to the future, which in music is a good way to be. My inspiration comes from Jim Kerr, The Cocteau Twins, Peter Gabriel and the like, Scott Weiland and Freddy Mercury.

How was appearing on the Australian TV: The Voice, what was your experience as a guest mentor like?

C: Well the television part was fun and fast. And it was wonderful to be able to impart some knowledge I have learned to a whole new generation, stuff I had learned through trial and error.

How did you feel when News Limited polled musicians and critics named you no.18 in Australia’s greatest all-time singers list?

C: It was really lovely and pretty exciting and surprising! There was some incredible talent in that list.

How excited are you to be releasing ‘Ain’t Over You’? We love it!

C: Ooooooh HOORAY we love it. It’s nice to make music people get excited about and want to dance to. If We can make you dance in your underpants annnnd in your lounge room as well as the club that’s a win!!

What are your plans following this release?

A: We made so many tunes in the past few years but didn’t feel comfortable releasing them while the EDM tsunami terrorised the airwaves. Now we’re ready to let it all out. There’ll be a few singles, some more club stuff and most likely an album later this year. So lot’s of new music which is very exciting, and kind of nerve racking as well.

Do you have any upcoming tours in the next year?

A: Our main focus in the short term is touring our Sneaky Sundays party which will be returning to Mykonos for the summer. We’re also close to bringing Sneaky Tuesday’s to life somewhere in Spain as well but of course we’ll let you know when the time is right.

Would you say your sound sits more within the Pop genre, or are you influenced majorly by the dance/house scene?

A: We just make music that comes naturally to us – there is never a plan, we never set out to copy anything and we never use samples – it’s just a melting pot of our influences and instincts. We are influenced by everything we hear, everything we see and everything we read. We make music you sing a long to and music toy dance to – what do you call that?

Where do you think your future lies within the music industry?

A: Hahahahaha….we haven’t got a clue. It’s a never ending cycle, so all you can do is be true to yourself, work hard, be eternally passionate, take risks and eventually – we all hope – the stars will align.

Thanks so much and good luck with everything!

C + A: It’s our pleasure and thank you!
