The distance between Sydney and Cairns is approximately 2413 km, along with the east coast route.  There are many ways in which you can cover this distance.

Travel to Western Australia

Road Trip by Car, Hired Car or Campervan

A typical road trip by car hired car or campervan could be through the following trail which will be memorable for a lifetime!

Sydney to Port Stephens

The first leg of your journey features the Bouddi National Park, an Aboriginal historical site, an old paddle steamer wreck – SS Maitland (1898), the East Maitland Heritage walk, water sports at Lake Macquarie and an excellent wine tour at Hunter Valley.

Port Stephens to Byron Bay

The second stretch features bottlenose dolphins, humpback whales and the Koalas at the Koala Hospital as well as hiking tracks.  Coffs Harbour, Dorrigoand Wedding Bells State Forest Drive complete this stretch.

Byron Bay to Brisbane

Beaches such as Coolangatta and Gold Coast as well as lush rainforests at the Springbrook National Park and Tambourine Mountain make up this beautiful stretch with many waterfalls.  This area also promises surfing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, golfing etc.

Brisbane to Hervey Bay

Mountains, beaches and animals sum up this leg of the journey, as you drive through the Glasshouse Mountains, Australia zoo, Sunshine Coast, Eumundi Markets and the Rainbow Beach.

Hervey Bay to Rockhampton

Hervey Bay, Rum Distillery of the Bundaberg and snorkeling at 1770 keep you interested throughout this leg of the journey.

Rockhampton to Townsville

This is the longest leg of the journey.  The Capricorn Caves, Mackay, Cape Hillsborough National Park and Airlie Beach will be covered in this stretch.

Townsville to Cairns

The final leg of your journey will take you along the Great Green Way with its 12 national parks along the way.  The Tyto Wetlands, Wallaman Falls, Mission Beach and Paronella Park are amongst them.

  • Townsville to Mission Beach
  • Mission Beach to Cairns

Train Journey
