The Best Of British At Splendour In The Grass
Being possibly the biggest and best festival in Australia, top acts from Britain will be flying over to bring their A-list sound to Splendour. Here’s some of the best British acts you can catch this year when it returns to North Byron Parklands on Friday 25th – Sunday 27th July 2014.
Lily Allen
An English Pop starlet that found instant success with ‘Smile’ back in 2006, Lily Allen is everyone’s favourite prom-dress-and-trainers-clas star with a strong personality that is prominent in all three of her studio albums, on her social media pages and in her live performances, making her one not to miss. Following a few years away from the spotlight, she’s releasing the controversial ‘Sheezus’ in May, so you can expect to hear all new material including ‘Hard Out Here’ plus your old favourites, ‘The Fear’ and ‘LDN’.
Two Door Cinema Club
An Indie threesome froom Northern Ireland, Two Door Cinema Club are no strangers are to Splendour, but this year, they take to the main stage for the first time with their catcy, sing-along tunes to please the crowd. The boys are heading to Australia in-between writing and recording their third album, which follows ‘Tourist History’ in 2010 and ‘Beacon’ in 2012. With previous appearances at Glastonbury, Isle Of Wight and Coachella, they are staples of the festival circuit.
London Grammar
With the haunting and operatic voice of Hannah Reid and the melancholic electronics courtesy of Dan Rothman and Dot Major, London Grammar are the hottest thing to come out of 2013. Their debut album, ‘If You Wait’ entered the UK album chart at number two back in September 2013 and garnered much critical acclaim, resulting in a Brit Award nomination for British Breakthrough Act. If you haven’t heard their stuff, think Radiohead meets Florence and the Machine.
Ben Howard
English singer-songwriter, Ben Howard, is bringing his soulful Indie voice and his guitar to Splendour. With influences from Van Morrison to Simon & Garfunkel, Howard gained a following after releasing EPs ‘These Waters’ and ‘Old Pine’, which was cemented with debut album, ‘Every Kingdom’. The outstanding material that featured saw him nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2012 and win the British Breakthrough Act and British Solo Male Artist gongs at the Brit Awards in 2013. If you’re a fan of brooding male vocals and the strings of a guitar, Ben Howard is your man.
Chvrches
This Electronic band hails from Scotland and only formed in 2011. Following the popularity of female lead singers, Chvrches consists of Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty. Attention surrounded this threesome in 2013; with their release of ‘Recover EP’ and debut album ‘The Bones of What You Believe’, they came fifth on the BBC’s Sound of 2013 list. Influenced by the likes of Prince, Depeche Mode and Whitney Houston, they make Electro-Pop that’s accessible to the masses and easy on the ears.
