The Crow’s Egg Film Review
Who would have thought a film about a dream to taste a factory-processed pizza could pull together such feelings of hope, anger, struggle and resilience, but this is what The Crow’s Egg achieved with great ease.
The story follows a pair of mischievous young brothers, known by their nicknames of Big Crow’s Egg and Little Crow’s Egg (for their love of the delicacy), who live in the slums of Chennai, along with their doting mother and grandmother.
Their persistence of a television set soon opens them to the big, wide world of advertisements, and here they set their eyes, and hopes and aspirations, on that one tantalizing piece of gooey magic; a slice of pizza.
As comical as this may seem to us here with ample opportunity of slices of pizza left, right and center, the two young boys must first work hard to collect the monthly wage to pay for their dream, and secondly, face the struggle of being two young slum-children who are not entirely welcomed into the restaurant to put it politely.
And so the devilish duo go on their great adventure to realize their dreams of tasting the most delicious food in town. It may as well be the most delicious food in the World to these two.
Part Bollywood-style musical and part social drama, this debut from Indian director M.Manikandan pulls together all the heart and soul of Chennai’s slum with that all important element; hope.
A must-see for cinema-goers of all ages, this film will certainly put a smile on your face. With Big Crow’s Egg leading his younger sidekick Little Crow’s Egg on the quest for pizza-tasting delight, the cheeky twosome will have you willing them on all the way to the counter.
