Weiss Interview Australian and New Zealand Tour Weiss Interview Australian and New Zealand Tour. Over the last couple of years few underground house acts have made the impression that the UK’s Weiss have had. With tracks such as “My Sister” and “Guitar Man” making their way to the top of music charts around the world (including Beatport), clubs and festivals around the world have been clamoring to book the infectious sounds of Weiss. On the eve of a very extensive Australasian tour, we got some time with the producer for a quick chat….
No doubt that you have mastered the art of a good sample in a track. How do you find them and whats your process when working new ideas?
When I have time I like to still go record shopping in old record shops or charity shops to find those gems, I love a bit of crate digging! I’m not really sure how but I somehow manage to just hear those parts that a lot of people miss, my brain will just latch on it and loop it round instantly! My Technics 1210’s are one of my most used bits of kit in the studio!
Toolroom recently launched their #RESET campaign of which you’ve been made an ambassador too. How do you envision taking house music into the next decade?
Yes its great working with the Toolroom guys, they’re my family, and with the Reset campaign it was about starting fresh with their approach and sound, a new era. For me moving forward into the future it’s Just about thinking outside of the box and trying not to get stuck with the same sound and processes each time when making a record. People tell me I have a distinct Weiss sound which you hear in most of my records but I’ll always try and do something different each time I make a track.
You’re an 80’s kid. What were your favourite artists form that period and why?
Yes totally! But I’m also a big 60’s & 70’s funk and disco fan, but it was the year I was born and discovered music so I guess the 80’s have a big part in my life. Artists like Prince, Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode, Joy Division and OMD all played a big part in my life growing up and my musical taste.
It seems you have the whole house music scene rallying behind your work. Whose music do you like grooving to?
Thanks! I’m really digging what Dense & Pika are putting out at the moment and always love what Green Velvet does. Mr TopHat & Art Alfie are producing some great chunky filtered records and I think Deepshakerz are finding their groove right now.
This is a very extensive Australasian tour and you will spend a bit of time Down Under, what will you do in your free time?
Well the last time I managed to get to the zoo, which was great seeing your local wildlife but I’m staying in Melbourne again for my downtime so will try and do a few things. Maybe try and see the Great Ocean Road. The sad thing is because the tour is so intense I hardly get to spend much downtime in each city.
How was playing at the Miami Music Conference earlier this year? Did you manage to enjoy any acts while you were there? Any hot tips in regards to Miami you can pass on to your readers?
It was the best year I’ve had so far. I did the DJ mag pool party, the Toolroom in Stereo party, and the Play It Down rooftop party but the craziest thing was ending up at P Diddy’s house on the Sunday at his private party. I managed to blag Jesse Rose on the decks which were funny, he had the whole party rocking! I think in terms of tips I would say just network and talk to as many different people as possible, there’s so much going on always try and get a disco nap in-between the daytime parties and evening ones 😉
You’ve said you’re a family man, and you regularly post photos with your son on Facebook. What does he think about your music? Has he shown a natural proclivity towards electronic music yet? Weiss Interview Australian and New Zealand Tour.
I do what I do for my family; they are the most important thing! My son loves house music and he’s always finding his way into my studio listening to my new tracks. If I see him bobbing up and down to a new project I’ll go ahead and develop it more 😉
You just released a killer new track ‘Ask For More’ with Jesse Rose. What a beauty! Who would you like to collaborate with next?
Thanks! I’m collaborating with the people I want at the moment so things are all good. I’ve just finished another track with Green Velvet due out in June on Relief Records, which sounds really good so watch out for that! For the rest of the year I’ll be focusing on more originals I think.
Your last album ‘City Life’ was a major success. How has London contributed to your music? And what do you look towards usually to draw inspiration from when you produce?
Growing up near the city has always put influences into my music, the style; the rawness of the city contributes to making a track. Everything around me on a daily basis inspires me to make music and certain sounds. London is one of the best cities in the world, which such a great and diverse clubbing scene, something that played a big part of my life growing up. I’m very lucky to travel to a lot of different countries most weekends so I take a lot from the different cities I visit as well.
Laptop and mobile phone excluded, what is the one essential travel item that you never go on tour without?
Weiss Interview Australian and New Zealand Tour Toothpaste. Can’t be djing with Breath Of Death!
