What Certificate Do You Need To Work In Australia?
To work in some sectors of Australia, you need a certificate, whether that be a criminal record check or skills and qualifications. To make your job search easier and as stress-free as possible, make sure you have everything you need to apply.
Working With Alcohol And Gambling
While we could have called this sector “bar and casino employment”, we would be brushing over what it actually covers. Anyone that works in a licensed venue to serve alcohol, including bars, restaurants and cafés, or enables any form of gambling, from slot machines to blackjack, needs to have the relevant certificate. The Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate is required by law and you may be asked to present your certificate to a visiting RSA officer during your employment. To obtain it, you need to enrol in a training course and complete an assessment, which is more straightforward than it sounds, but the laws on the responsible service of alcohol may change between states, so save time and make sure yours is valid across the whole of Australia if you’re moving around a lot. With gambling establishments, you need a certificate for the Responsible Service of Gambling (RSG) or the Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG). Achieved by taking a course, it will enable you to spot problem gamblers. In certain states, both the alcohol and gambling certificates can be obtained online, but others require you to attend a class in person, and they both vary in cost depending on the quality of the course you take.

Nursing And Midwifery
To work in Australia as a nurse or midwife, you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. To register, you must meet their standards of professional development, criminal history, English language, professional indemnity insurance and regency of practice. International applicants are assessed on their educational qualifications and whether they are substantially equivalent to Australian qualifications. For this, applicants must meet eight criteria with supporting documents that include evidence of identity, academic qualifications, Certificate of Registration Status (CRS) or Certificate of Good Standing (CGS), work history, criminal history and English language skills. The CRS or CGS should be from every jurisdiction outside of Australia that you have been registered with as a health practitioner in the last five years.

Working With Children
Besides Tasmania, every state in Australia requires a Working With Children Check before you can gain employment in child-related areas. Unlike police checks, the Working With Children Check can be carried from one employment to another, and is valid until the relevant state dictates. Each state has its own board, procedures, requirements and time periods for validity. New South Wales offers a checklist to determine whether you are suitable to work with children, while the systems in Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and Northern Territory are designed so that the certificate can be withdrawn if the holder commits a criminal offence.
