Forming as a joke to play a single show in Adelaide, the entirely beard-based band have gone on to become underground legends of the Australian music scene. Since the release of their second album ‘Beards Beards Beards’ (2009), The Beards have spread their bearded message throughout Australia. Now they’re hitting the road again, bringing with them their much-anticipated third album, ‘Having a Beard is the New Not Having a Beard’. Frontman Johann Beardraven said of the album, “it will be our third concept album about the same concept – the only concept of any importance to any of us – beards!” Watch them perform ‘You Should Consider Having Sex With a Bearded Man’ live for Triple J.

DIAFRIX and JOELISTICS (dual single launch)
Two of Australia’s most eclectic hip-hop acts join forces on this ‘Running To Shine’ national tour. Both acts are excited to announce brand new singles for 2012 – Diafrix with ‘Running It’ and Joelistics with ‘The Shining’. Melbourne duo Diafrix had a bumper 2011, including the release of their biggest single yet with the Daniel Merriweather-assisted ‘Simple Man’, scoring national support slots for Bruno Mars and Tinie Tempah, accepting an invitation to perform at the UK’s legendary Glastonbury Festival, and now kick-starting the year with their brand new single. After releasing his debut album in 2011, Joelistics returns with the new single ‘The Shining’ – pushing his sound further outside the realms of hip hop, into a land of pulsing, anthemic electro and lush electronica. The single will be released on ‘The Shining’ EP, and will also feature remixes of tracks off Joelistics’ critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Voyager’. https://youtu.be/ATSNwF32Hf4

CHARLES BRADLEY & HIS EXTRAORDINAIRES (USA)
Soul man Charles Bradley is making his way to Australia at the tail-end of summer to lay some Brooklyn soul vibes on music lovers across the country! His January 2011 album ‘No Time For Dreaming’ is the culmination of a lifetime of paying dues. In his distinctively rough-hewn timbre one hears the unmistakable voice of experience – each note and gruff inflection a reflection of his extended, sometimes rocky, personal path. Charles Bradley’s unique brand of soul music is highlighted by his exceptionally gravelly voice; the sometimes-pained words truly conveying a life well lived, just as soul should be sung. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=uegzZWp6Y4w

CHRIS HILLMAN (USA – The Byrds) & HERB PEDERSEN (USA)
Two of the most revered figures in the fields of American music that have come to be known as Americana, covering country, rock, folk, blues, bluegrass and everything in between, are headed for three weeks in Australia this March, including this show. Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen met and first played together in their teens in southern California, and both were noted bluegrass players before they hit their twenties. Chris was playing in notable bluegrass bands in his late teens. On the verge of leaving music and enrolling in university while still in his teens, he was recruited to play electric bass, an instrument he had no familiarity with, for The Beefeaters as they were known then. Quickly becoming known as The Byrds, they recorded a Bob Dylan song in 1965 and the rest, as they say, is history. Meanwhile, Herb Pedersen had advanced from his bluegrass career to become one of the most in demand session players in the LA music and movies recording scene, on banjo, guitar and vocals. Today, Chris and Herb have their own musical projects and bands on the go, as well as regularly touring as a duo, which they’ve been doing for nearly two decades. Watch the pair play the Byrds classic ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QrV7IG1ksQ

ELECTRELANE (UK) – SELLING FAST!
Heralding the return of one of the most innovative and intimate bands in recent history, Electrelane will visit our shores for the first time since 2005. Having built a cult following since forming in 1998, Electrelane are renowned for their unique treatment of pop, harmonies, Krautrock and the farfisa organ. Originally from Brighton, UK, the four piece are quite possibly the only band comfortable incorporating a cappella ensembles, Spanish sonnets and samples of a football match in their work. They’re definitely the only band that can make it sound good – a testament to their playfulness with sound and structured experimentation.

WOODEN SHJIPS (USA)
San Francisco trance-rock quartet WOODEN SHJIPS return to our shores, bringing back their trance-inducing, desert-fried, maximum-volume rock ‘n’ roll. While indebted to the psych music of the ‘60s and mid-‘70s, electric Neil Young, and even the induced travels of Spacemen 3, the Shjips’ music is in every way their own. The experience of Wooden Shjips has been equated to that of the Japanese phenomenon called maboroshi, which is somewhat similar to seeing a mirage or hallucinating in time. In the context of imagination/dreams, maboroshi is attributed to past occurrences and can take on a meaning like “phantoms.” The group’s songs seem to exist in a dream state in which anything is possible.
