What’s on in Melbourne Victoria – Nick Huggins Album Launch
Following on from the success of his 2007 album Shipwreck LP, Melbourne musician and producer Nick Huggins returns with his sophomore solo album Five Lights.
Coming out of a period of intense collaboration as a producer on records by Hello Satellites, Oscar + Martin and Mick Turner, Nick retreated for months to write and explore the build-up of ideas and reactions since his 2007 debut solo album.
Set for release on 14 October 2011 on Two Bright Lakes / Remote Control, Five Lights is a solitary and quietly joyful celebration of acute sensory experiences. Five Lights is a multi-format work centered around an album of short songs, inspired by the ability of simple things to be immediately understood but slowly appreciated. The album has a palette largely restricted to national guitar, homemade electronics, massed recorder, firewood percussion, piano, string synthesizer and voice.
The first single ‘Iceberg’ begins with an elongated marine call reverberating, echoic piano and haunting guitar tones rising slowly, before Nick’s unique vocal tones emerge first spoken then sweetly sung. Featuring the handmade electronic sounds, acoustic tones and attention to sonic detail that have characterized his production collaborations with Hello Satellites, Kid Sam and Otouto, ‘Iceberg’ is the first experience of an enveloping, ear arresting album.
Nick Huggins will launch Five Lights with a matinee show at the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne on Sunday 23 October, with interstate album launches to be announced.
