Is There A High Demand For Nursing Jobs In Sydney And New South Wales Australia? There are 331,000 registered nurses and midwives across the nation, including 40,755 practitioners who are registered as both nurse and midwife.  With the rapidly ageing population of Australia, the demand for nurses is rapidly growing, creating more and more job opportunities for those who have made nursing their career.

Experts in the Australian government have predicted that healthcare will see a boom in the immediate future and that there will be a nursing shortage by 2030.

Is There A High Demand For Nursing Jobs In Sydney And New South Wales Australia? Shortage of Nurse staff

The state of New South Wales is on the brink of a nursing crisis, with south-west Sydney set to face a “catastrophic” shortage of staff, according to official data.  The 70,000 full-time staff of the state will soon not be able to meet the patient demand, and over the next decade, the shortfall will only accelerate.

The future

By 2030, around 82,000 full-time registered nurses and midwives will be needed, while only 74,000 will be available.  This will create a gap between 8,000 health workers. Due to the ageing workforce and ageing demographic, many large healthcare organizations have realized that recruiting younger nurses, training, developing and retaining them have become very necessary.

Freedom of Information

The documents released through a long-running Freedom of Information (FOI) application portrays a dire need for nurses in hospitals and aged-care centres that rely on enrolled nurses.

During the last year alone, New South Wales found itself in a situation where it needed to find and recruit 2000 full-time enrolled nurses to meet the demand.  The rapidly ageing population triggers an ageing workforce. This contributes largely to the current workforce of 9,000 full-time staff plummet to 7,500 by 2030, while the demand is sky-rocketed to about 13,000.

The prediction

It is projected that about 600 enrolled nurses will suffice the requirement of South-west Sydney in 2030.  However, only 150 will be available, thus creating a serious shortage of nurses in Sydney.
