KEEP SYDNEY OPEN – BELMORE PARK – OCTOBER 9TH
We’re urging the NSW government to rethink its policies on nightlife and lockouts. The event is set to draw thousands to Sydney’s streets this Sunday October 9th. The rally commences at Belmore Park at 12pm.
Speakers include Hayley Mary, lead singer of the Aria award winning band The Jezabels, Sydney hip hop artist Urthboy, City of Sydney Councillor Jess Scully and Keep Sydney Open’s Tyson Koh.
The rally will also feature a live performance from One Day, which is comprised of some of Sydney hip hop’s finest artists, Joyride, Horrorshow, Spit Syndicate and Jackie Onasis. They will be joined by some of Sydney’s finest DJs, Touch Sensitive and Ariane, as well as the legendary Aria adorned Paul Mac with Stereogamous.
It has never been clearer that the lockouts are the wrong answer to the question of how to create a safe, fun and vibrant city. Together we will march in the streets to call on the state government to let Sydney have the same, world class late-night culture we all know this city is capable of having.
Keep Sydney Open recommends evidence based policy, including:
1. Developing best-practice policing strategies;
2. Investing in 24/7 public transport;
3. Implementing integrated urban planning reform;
4. Encouraging diversification of after-dark activities;
5. Establishing anti-violence education & intervention campaigns;
6. Incentivising well-run venues; and
7. Appointing a Night Mayor.
Keep Sydney Open calls for the lifting of the 1:30am lockout, allowing exemptions to the 3:00am cease of service time, reverting the 10pm takeaway cut-off to midnight and removing the freeze on liquor license applications in inner-city entertainment districts.
We will work with the government and relevant stakeholders in any way we can to improve the living standard of all Sydneysiders.
