Theatre nurses who work for hospitals are expected to be “on call” during the evenings, nights, weekends and even on holidays for emergency surgery that can happen 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

1. Maintain sterility of oneself, surgical team and the operating theatre
2. Assist surgeons with certain surgical instruments / conditions
3. Remain organized and prepared for the surgery and possible complications
4. Prepare the operating theatre and surgical instruments
5. Have excellent communication skills
6. Liaise with the surgeon and the surgical teams
7. Be excellent team players
8. Possess excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
9. Anticipate complications and plan the immediate steps
10. Perform proper surgical instrument and sponge counts
11. Recognize respiratory and cardiovascular decline and know initial steps to obtain help and to stabilize the patient
12. Knowledge of medication dosage, complications, contraindication, interactions and medicine labelling

Professional Qualifications:

To become an operating theatre nurse, you must become a Registered Nurse (RN) by completing an Associate Degree or Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  Next you have to sit for your NCLEX-RN to become certified. Your hospital will train you in advanced surgical scrub techniques.

The CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room) Exam directly impacts the career of a nurse in this specialty field.  A nurse should possess the following qualifications to sit for the CNOR Exam:

• Current and unencumbered RN licence
• Current perioperative nurse in nursing education, administration, research or clinical practice
• Minimum of two years of perioperative nursing experience including 2400 hours of perioperative nursing
• At least 1200 hours of intraoperative nursing
