What’s on in Sydney New South Wales – World Bar August Gig Guide

Follow us on Google News

On Friday the 26th of August, The World Bar is hosting a collaboration from 3 Sydney creative heavy-weights: MUM, as ever the mighty womb of this fair town’s live music scene; the awesome SPITPRESS free magazine; and MAJOR RAISER, the uber-hip multi-faceted fundraising initiative everybody’s talking about. They’ve curated a sublime lineup over 4 levels of everyone’s favourite Friday band night, s tarring some local mainstays and some hand-picked upstarts: PEPPERCORN (Matt Chapman from Red Rider’s new project) FISHING (DJ Set), THE MOUNTAINS, OCEANICS, ROCKETS, TANK, TIM FITZ, BARNZY, VACANT FIELD and CUERVO make up the hefty live element while the effervescent MUM DJs play as much Bruce Springsteen as they can get away with, before, in between, and after.

We all know all three of these parties do some great work, but all together, in the same building, surrounded by music and good times?! Its going to be pretty spectacular. Australian Youth Against Cancer is the nominated charity for this event on behalf of Major Raiser, a youth-run not-for-profit dedicated to providing support for young cancer sufferers. The Chris O’Brian Lifehouse at RPA, a world-class comprehensive cancer centre bringing together treatment, research, education and support in one incredible new facility, is a current project AYAC is a part of. A portion of the door monies on the night will go to AYAC, thanks to Major Raiser.
Its a great cause and will be a fantastic event – drop me an email if you’d like any further info about that (flyer attached).
And now, the news.

MONDAY AUGUST 22th: OPEN MIC JAZZ

Jazz: The Final Frontier. If you told me two years ago that The World Bar would one day be hosting a sophisticated live jazz event fortnightly – well, I would have personally dug up Dean Martin’s grave and eaten his hat. Luckily, you didn’t, so I don’t have to desecrate Dino’s hallowed resting place… yet. And what’s even tastier than a dead man’s hat? Most things really, although what I specifically had in mind was our delicious gourmet pizzas. Best enjoyed by an open World Bar fireplace as the sultry tones of our swingin’ jazz band fill your happy ears! Its one of the best things we’ve got going, baby, and its completely and utterly free from 7:00pm til 10:30pm every 2nd Monday. Email Rinske at [email protected] for more info or to get involved yourself. DJs after.

TUESDAY AUGUST 23rd: POP PANIC SILENT DISCO EDITION!

If you’ve never partied with us on a Tuesday night for Pop Panic, chances are you are a successful human who holds down a steady job and enjoys functioning human relationships. And that’s no way to live your life! This week we’re smugly pleased to present a SILENT DISCO EXTRAVAGANZA – you know the drill; headphones handed out and two channels of mega party tunes (Propaganda DJs VS Pop Panic DJs) to choose from as you shuffle about like a weirdo in silence. Pretty fun. DJs Pablo Calamari, Urby and Andy & Mike spearhead this Tuesday night kraziness, and [email protected] can tell you more. Free, from 9pm.

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 24th: THE WALL: ART AND DUBSTEP

The mid-week wobble/arts fest that is Wednesdays at The Wall is growing in notoriety and general awesomeness… check out the party pics here if you don’t believe me: https://www.facebook.com/wearethewall

In the arts corner this week, we’re excited to be hosting the mashed-up pop paintings of JOSH YOUNG; his works are a collision of air-brushed sexiness, black-ink sketchpad cartoon noodles and paint dripping excess in large format (Free bubbly for early arrivals). Aaaaand in the party corner, dubstep heavy-weights GLOVECATS are rupturing organs in the clubroom, alongside SPECIAL K and HYDRAULIX. For those who prefer party tunes of the highest order, STARJUMPS, ALISON WONDERLAND, and MY LORD CHIARI will rule the terrace all night. ART: [email protected] PARTY: [email protected].

We need artists of all kinds to exhibit their works, commission-free at The Wall! Believe in yourself and you can achieve anything! Get in touch with [email protected] for more info.  Art, international DJs, the biggest and best Wednesday in town… free as a bird. Free entry, 7:30pm til you don’t even want to know.

THURSDAY AUGUST 25th: PROPAGANDA

Propaganda is the biggest, sweatiest indie night this side of London and it happens to a lot of people every Thursday night at The World Bar. This week we’ve invited FBi Radio‘s finest SHAG to rise up behind the decks and sooth the hootin’ and a hollerin’ Propaganda masses with his melifluous indie party tunez. Couple this with DJs Urby and Finlay and you’ve got yourself a guaranteed party in everyone’s pants. It kicks off at 9pm, students free all night, everyone else is $5. Chat to [email protected] for more info.

FRIDAY AUGUST 26th: MUM, THE SPITPRESS AND MAJOR RAISER present WORLDS COLLIDE

One of the biggest events on the indie calendar this year is about to happen to you, you lucky person. Everyone’s favourite Friday night weekly band night and surrogate party-mother MUM is teaming up with THE SPITPRESS and the benevolent creatives from MAJOR RAISER.

Just to reiterate; PEPPERCORN (Matt Chapman from Red Rider’s new project) FISHING (DJ Set), THE MOUNTAINS, OCEANICS, ROCKETS, TANK, TIM FITZ, BARNZY, VACANT FIELD, CUERVO and MUM DJs = good. More details at the top of the page.

SATURDAY AUGUST 27th: WHAM!

The beat, t’is a primal thing… It is an ancient call, etched into the heartbeats of our ancestors; it is the hypnotic thud of primordial drums over an ancient horizon. The confluence of this power erupts in a nexus of party-times every Saturday at The World Bar AND WE CALL IT WHAM! Worship at the alter of dance with high priests MICAH (Perth), James Taylor & MC Shureshock, Murat Kilic, Ben Morris, Telefunken, The Jackal, Temnein, Jo Gadget, Bermuda P, Diamond Lights and Discopunx. 5 rooms and a bazillion DJs… $15 from 8pm and $20 after 11pm. [email protected] can tell you more.

SUNDAY AUGUST 28th: DEEP HOUSE

The antidote to Winter isn’t staying home like a wimp; its the warm deep house sounds emanating from the Apothecary Bar every Sunday at The World. Rolling basslines, open fireplaces and your skilled selektors DJs James Taylor, Mitch Crosher and Sullo from 9pm. Contact: [email protected]
