Accommodation, along with practically anything located near Uluru, is pricey. The Yulara township was built specifically to cater for the huge numbers of visitors who flock to Uluru every year. But a captive audience means high prices and Yulara mostly caters to the high flyers with 5 star hotels and resorts, high-end restaurants and just one overpriced campsite – and there’s not even a view of Uluru. But don’t despair, you can actually find free camping at Uluru!
Taking the road less travelled is always a good idea, and when it comes to getting the chance to camp at Uluru for free with a truly cracking view of the iconic rock, this remote road is one you don’t want to miss.
Exactly 8km before the turnoff for Yulara from the Lasseter Highway, keep your eyes peeled for a dirt road on the right-hand side. This is the road you want to take to get the best camping spot in the area. Make sure you take the turn at exactly 8km before Yulara as there are a few around here and you don’t want to take the wrong one and waste valuable fuel – the Outback is not a cheap place to fill your tank.

Once you turn down the road you’ll be faced with a labyrinth of tracks that criss-cross each other interspersed with scrubland. You’ll also see a bunch of campervans and campers. Stay to the far left of the track and drive up the small mound which will lead you in the direction of Uluru, which will by now be right in front of you. Keep driving as far as you want – the further you go the further you’ll be from other campers and the better the view becomes. This is your spot. Awesome views of Uluru and not a cent to be paid.
This is the best place to base yourself while visiting the area. Not only is it free, but you’ll also be completely immersed in the landscape, waking up to beautiful sunrises in the spiritual heartland of Australia. Join up with an Uluru tour and explore with a local ranger and learn about the remarkable flora, fauna and Aboriginal significance of Uluru and its surrounds.
