Things About Alice Springs You Didn’t Know

Discover intriguing things you didn’t know about Alice Springs.

A town called Alice Springs

Alice Springs or simple “Alice” as it’s better known sits slap bang in the geographical heart of Australia. This remote outpost feels anything but remote, with bars and cafes, restaurants and hostels and all the amenities you can think of. You’d be forgiven for forgetting you’re about as far away from civilisation as it’s possible to get when travelling through the Red Centre. Most visitors just pass through Alice stopping briefly for supplies before travelling on, but that doesn’t mean Alice isn’t worth sticking around for. Here are a few surprising facts about this remote outpost.

Travel to Western Australia

It’s got artistic cred

Alice Springs has been heralded as the artistic capital of the Northern Territory with more art galleries per population than anywhere else in the country. If you’re after some quality Aboriginal art that directly benefits local Aboriginal people, then this is the place to go.

Festivals, festivals, festivals

For somewhere so cut off from the rest of the country, and with such a small population, Alice doesn’t hang about when it comes to festivals. Numerous events are held throughout the year, including the ridiculously popular Camel Cup and the artsy bash Desert Festival, plus the Parrtjima festival of light to name just a few. You’ll never get bored.

It’s out there

Alice is about as remote as you can get, while still being able to get a hot shower and a decent internet connection. It’s just equidistant between Darwin and Adelaide at around 1500km from each, and it’s a whopping 3605km from Perth. Yes, Australia is massive.

A long history

The Arrernte people have lived in the area that is now Alice Springs for the past 50,000 years and according to traditional stories believe the land was shaped by caterpillars, wild dogs and other ancestral figures. There are many traditionally important sites surrounding the town where you can learn more about its history.

It’s gaining hipster credentials

Slowly but surely. It’s not quite up there with Fitzroy in Melbourne but Alice has a burgeoning hipster scene with brunch favourite Page 27 serving up eggs done right, and by evening hip Hanuman dishing out tasty Indian Thai fusion cuisine. Your taste buds will thank you.
