What’s on in Melbourne Victoria – Melbourne Music Week Only three more days to enjoy 2011 Melbourne Music Week! If you haven’t stepped out to experience some of the incredible Melbourne Music Week events on offer, this is your chance.
Don’t miss the Live Music Safari on Thursday 24 November – ten of Melbourne’s iconic music venues teaming up for the first time to present an unparalleled day and night of free live music with more than 60 acts. Venues include £1000 Bend, Revolt (Kensington), Cherry Bar, Roxanne and The Toff with musicians such as Wally de Backer (Gotye), Spiral Stairs (Pavement), Martin Martini, Last Dinosaurs, Joelistics, The Puta Madre Brothers and Super Wild Horses to name just a few.
Get down to KUBIK Melbourne, the open-air architectural installation has made its Southern Hemisphere debut at Birrarung Marr for Melbourne Music Week. With the hottest line up of headline acts, you still have the opportunity to catch Daedelus (USA), Die Vogle (Ger), Qua, Alexkid (France), The Gaslamp Killer (USA), plus many more over the last weekend.
Record and Release will be keeping Racing Club Lane and the Buffalo Club warm all week – the last few days see Electric Smile Band and //THIS THING// record and release their new tracks. On Friday night MMW has special guests at the recording site – The Meanies supergroup will do a live performance. Plus the much loved Taco Truck will be parking in the laneway for all to enjoy.
On Friday 25 and Saturday 26 November catch the last two Labels Live @ performances. See some of Melbourne’s leading bands presented in extraordinary locations – head to St Michaels Church to see HTRK headline on 25 November or see Canyons and Oscar + Martin play at the Melbourne Central Rooftop on 26 November.
Saturday 26 November sees a full day of free entertainment; venture down Melbourne’s iconic Hosier Lane from 2pm where the best of the city’s busking talent will perform their unique sounds and styles against the backdrop of Melbourne’s most iconic street art laneway. Street Change is presented in partnership with the Rotary Club of Melbourne Park.
BYO Radio and Rug for a Lush afternoon of reggae, UK bass and dubstep at the Ghetto Blaster Picnic hosted by Heavy Innit on Saturday 26 November, 2pm – 7pm at KUBIK on the Upper Terrace at Birrarung Marr. The Ghetto Blaster Picnic ushers in Summer with transmissions via FM radio within a radius of 500 meters from the decks.
For those with kids, head down to Artplay for the DJ Kidz Dance Party on Saturday 26 November 2pm- 4pm. Melbourne’s young music lovers and parents alike can dance to Spoonbill well as mixes from the DJ Kidz workshops. Tickets are $5 per family.
In the evening of Saturday 26th November, see a reprise of the launch performance of the Giant Theremin at 7.30pm at Signal on Northbank. Standing more than 7 meters tall, this is a world-first interactive musical instrument created by local audio-visual performance artist Robin Fox. The performance will feature two original music and dance works created by some of Melbourne’s leading creatives including Stephanie Lake (Chunky Move) and Dexter.
What’s on in Melbourne Victoria – Melbourne Music Week Throughout the week, Melbourne’s creative and independent retail and hospitality businesses have also been presenting events under the theme The Aesthetics of Sound. From bars and cafes such as Bar Americano, Ponyfish Island and Manchester Press to clothing and art stores such as Alice Euphemia, Honor Among Thieves, Pieces of Eight and Basement Discs, each outlet will interpret The Aesthetics of Sound into an event, installation or exhibition that is unique to their store and show how music has inspired their brand.
Melbourne Music Week runs 18 – 26 November. Partnering with Melbourne’s music industry heavyweights to showcase some of the best emerging and established local and international talent on offer, the innovative program features high-quality, cutting-edge and diverse events staged at unique locations across the city. Events include live performances and DJ gigs, kids’ programs, industry summits, workshops, seminars and much more.
