ARIEL PINK’S HAUNTED GRAFFITI (USA) – GOLDEN PLAINS FESTIVAL SIDESHOW
Sunday 4 March 2012 8:00pm
Los Angeles underground cult figure turned international pop star, Ariel Pink’s sound is as sublime as it is surreal, loaded with hazy nostalgia and a fiercely experimental pop palette. Establishing himself as one of the most prolific songwriters and unique talents of his generation, Ariel Pink’s influence on today’s bands and genres has been profound. Ariel produces and plays almost all of his own music, and is noted for creating drum sounds using primarily his mouth and sometimes his armpits. His music has a very lo-fi sound, and after joining with other band members to become Haunted Graffiti, the band went on to be selected by Animal collective to perform at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival they curated in May 2011. Having played Laneway in early 2011, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti are back for Golden Plains and will play this sideshow.

BLACK LIPS (USA) – SELLING FAST! GOLDEN PLAINS FESTIVAL SIDESHOW
Wednesday 7 March 2012 8:00pm
Black Lips, the hell-raising rock ‘n’ roll quartet from Atlanta, make their welcome return to Australia this March. Already announced for Golden Plains and Adelaide Festival, they have continued to tear apart stages all over the world and March 2012 will be no different as the misadventures continue. Released in 2011, Black Lips’ sixth album ‘Arabia Mountain’ was produced by Grammy-winning super producer Mark Ronson, but the band has by no means turned their backs on the storming punk and garage-rock that is the core of their confrontational style. The result is an album with “chiselled production and considerably tighter songcraft provid(ing) a better forum for showcasing the band’s a better forum for showcasing the band’s subversive sense of humour”.

ROKY ERICKSON (USA) – SELLING FAST! GOLDEN PLAINS FESTIVAL SIDESHOW
Tuesday 13 March 2012 7:30pm
Legendary rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Roky Erickson is set to tour Australia. Singer, songwriter and guitarist for legendary band The 13th Floor Elevators, one of the first bands to describe their music as “psychedelic”, the band made an impact on the San Francisco scene when they moved there in 1966. The Elevator’s unique brand of heavy, hard-rocking electric blues spurned one hit ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’, yet their appeal was far-reaching, influencing a long list of artists including R.E.M., ZZ Top, The Cramps and many more. More than four decades later, 2010 saw the release of Roky’s first album of new material in 14 years. Watch the trailer for the ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’ documentary about the legend, and prepare for Roky’s first ever time in Australia.

Niche Productions, Live Nation & 3RRR Present’ Soul man Charles Bradley is making his way to Australia at the tail-end of summer to lay some Brooklyn soul vibes on music lovers across the country! His January 2011 album ‘No Time For Dreamers’ is the culmination of a lifetime of paying dues. In his distinctively rough-hewn timbre one hears the unmistakable voice of experience – each note and gruff inflection a reflection of his extended, sometimes rocky, personal path. Charles Bradley’s unique brand of soul music is highlighted by his exceptionally gravelly voice; the sometimes-pained words truly conveying a life well lived, just as soul should be sung.

ELECTRELANE (UK) – On sale Monday 21 November
Friday 23 March 2012 8:30pm
Heralding the return of one of the most innovative and intimate bands in recent history, Electrelane will visit our shores for the first time since 2005. Having built a cult following since forming in 1998, Electrelane are renowned for their unique treatment of pop, harmonies, Krautrock and the farfisa organ. Originally from Brighton, UK, the four piece are quite possibly the only band comfortable incorporating a cappella ensembles, Spanish sonnets and samples of a football match in their work. They’re definitely the only band that can make it sound good – a testament to their playfulness with sound and structured experimentation.
