Tourist guide to The Reptiles in North Western Australia, Crocodiles

The saltwater crocodile grows up to 6 m or more, and lives in rivers, creeks and sometimes the sea. They usually live in the downstream, coastal sections of rivers, marshes, and estuaries and often venture to the sea.

The freshwater crocodile is found in Australia. His muzzle is much narrower than that of the saltwater crocodile, and he does not see people as prey, so he tries to stay out of our way instead of chasing us. They generally live further upstream and do not enter saltwater.

Turtles

Six of the world’s seven species of sea turtle live in Australian waters. The patch turtle nestles nowhere else in the world except the north coast of Australia. Other sea turtles in Australian waters are the green turtle, Kemp’s ridley, Olive Ridley, mock carp and leatherback turtle, which we all share with other warm world regions.

Snakes

Some Australian snakes are known to be among the most poisonous in the world, but this does not make them the most dangerous.

Families of snakes in Australia include:

• Sled with front-fanged

• Locks with a back angle

• Pythons

• Blind snakes

• File hoses

Lizards

There are 5 families of lizards in Australia:

Skinks

Australia has more skinks than any other country, and there are more skink species in Australia than any other species of lizard. They usually have a smooth exterior. The scales on their heads have a mirror image and share this bilateral symmetry with flap-footed lizards.

Dragons

Bumpy, prickly or crested lizards in Australia are usually dragons. This is our second-largest family of lizards.

Monitors

These are our biggest lizards. Screens have forked tongues, such as snakes, and use the same way, sweeping them in and out to smell what’s around. The most common is the lace monitor that sometimes wanders around the picnic tables in search of leftovers.

Flap-footed lizards

This is an exclusive Australian family of lizards. They are sometimes confused with snakes, but remnants of hind legs can still be seen as small flaps; they have external ear openings, and their tongues are not forked, although not all of these features are easy to see in some species.
