The island hosts the biggest colony of Penguins in Western Australia, and these are also the smallest species of penguins in the world. The fairy penguins, the smallest breed of penguins, are very shy creatures and hence it is hard to see them in the wild. Mostly they spend the whole day in the water and return to the island only once night has fallen. Therefore, in order to actually see some penguins, you can visit the Discovery Centre, which is a great opportunity to observe how the rangers and the birds interact with each other. These shy creatures will only allow feedings from their own carer, but visitors can come see them get fed at the allocated times.
