How to find Farm jobs in Western Australia

Western Australia’s agricultural sector is currently facing a labour shortage. And, the timing could not be any better for those who are looking for working holiday farm jobs.

What kind of farm work is available?

Mostly, fruit and vegetable pickers are in demand. The work involved requires little to no training. And, you will be spending hours in picturesque lands, working in fresh air and sunshine. In spring and summer, you can expect to find fruit picking jobs. But, that is not all. Some farms require workers to harvest grains, pick cotton and shear sheep. You could also find a job as a farm hand, working with machinery, maintaining the property or operating vehicles.

How much can I get paid for farm work?

On average you can get paid up to $24 per hour. But, sometimes you can get paid even more for piece rate (payment for the amount you picked). The good news is that there is a relocation assistance scheme in place to help with expenses of taking up regional work temporarily. If you are an Australian resident, you can claim up to $6000. And, if you are a temporary migrant (backpackers included) with a work permit, you can claim up to $2000.

When is the best time to look for a farm job in Western Australia?

From January to March, you can find jobs in vineyards in Margaret River, Swan Valley and Mt Barker. There will be plenty of openings for fruit picking in Pemberton, Manjimup and Dohnybrook from March to May. From May to September you can find work in Kununurra picking rockmelon and zucchini. The period between July to March is the avocado season in Busselton, Cowalla, Manjimup and Gingin.

Why you should look for farm job to suit your skills?

If physical labour isn’t exactly your cup of tea, look for something else. All farm work does not involve harvesting, and work in the field. You can also find farm work related to data entry, working in a lab, cleaning and packing sheds. All you have to do is be honest, and write your application to suit your strengths. But, you should never wait until the last minute to apply. Start looking early and be mindful of the seasons as well as requirements of your potential employees.

Where should to look for farm jobs? You can even find vacancies on hostel noticed boards. But, if you are looking online, Gumtree is a good option. Fruit Picking Jobs and Harvest Trail specifically list farm jobs. Indeed and Seek are two other good options.
