A journey down eastern Australia is never complete without a stop-off in the Gold Coast. With some of the most picturesque beaches in the world, endless entertainment and 4WD adventure, we’re going to show you why the GoldCoast is well worth your attention.
The important thing to remember about the Gold Coast is that you can choose your own adventure. It contains the largest number of amusement parks in the country, from water rides to rollercoasters, themed rides and go karting, and shopping experiences to impress the fussiest of fashionistas. There’s a 70km stretch of sandy, gold beaches, all of which have their own unique selling point, from surfing breaks to picnic spots.
Whether you’re knackered from the day’s adventures or you just want to take some time out to relax, you can while away the hours on any of them. Currumbin is particularly idyllic and charming with photography opportunities aplenty and calm water sports including kite-surfing and kayaking, while Snapper Rocks is popular for surfers. And, of course, there’s the unforgettable Surfers Paradise – a bubbling hub of culture, fashion and development (not forgetting its breath-taking skyline) that has seen the strip become famous world-over. The beachfront markets are perfect to peruse for a special gift, with 120 stalls selling accessories, arts & crafts and jewellery to suit everyone’s tastes. There’s also a fantastic nightlife of pubs, bars and clubs to make your day last that little bit longer.
The fun doesn’t stop there, because heading further inland, you’ll find Hinterland, an area of outstanding natural beauty comprising of Lamington National Park, the Tamborine Mountain, Numinbah Valley and Springbrook. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, there’s something to amaze around every corner. The Green Mountains of Lamington are particularly scenic, with lush, ancient trees, remnants of volcanic formations and stunning views of the Scenic Rim chain of mountains.
If you’re quite taken with the area, you can choose to stay overnight at the camping ground, with many paths and tracks leading to hidden treasures and endemic wildlife. There are so many options available, you really have to be picky about what you want to see. To get a general view of your surroundings, there are full-day Rainforest and Wildlife Tour that combine Lamington National Park, Tamborine Mountain, Sarabah Valley and the Treetop Boardwalk through the rainforest canopy.
Should you want to discover more about your favourite tipple, there are distillery, brewery and vineyard tours to whet your appetite, including Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard and Winery in Hinterland and the Burleigh Brewery Company, which is the only craft brewery on the Gold Coast. There are also galleries and museums for those of you that want to get cultured, and spas and retreats if you want to to indulge in a little pampering.
When the time comes that your eyes start to get heavy and you need to rest your head, there is a wide range of accommodation, so you can choose which will suit you best. From apartments and holiday homes to hostels and B&B’s, no matter what your budget, you’ll find a very comfortable place to get some shut-eye.
The Gold Coast is a lively and welcoming area of Australia that provides fun and frivolity for everyone. From the coast, through the buzzing centre and into the rainforest, there’s so much to do here, it’s like everything there is to love about Australia all rolled into one.
