This sprawling Hunters Hill mansion is the perfect marriage of heritage architecture and modern design. The simplicity of the home’s open plan layout and finishes create a sophisticated but relaxed ambience and mask the complexity of its construction and intensive detail.

The basement level, accommodating a spacious study, was excavated through rock whilst the original sandstone and brick home was suspended above. Equally impressive are the services hidden within the building’s fabric that ensure this home is not only comfortable but also energy efficient and environmentally sustainable. A sophisticated 3-point water management system has been installed to capture stormwater for landscape irrigation, grey-water for reuse in toilets and provision for future black-water treatment and recycling. Further, the home actively generates clean energy through roof top photovoltaic cells whilst consciously minimising energy consumption via low voltage dimmable lighting and a reliance on natural gas to power the home’s hydronic floor heating, pool heater, water heaters and cooking appliances. Finally, passive design elements such as a north facing orientation, generous eaves, cross ventilation and wall, floor and ceiling insulation complete this home’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Internally the home is finished with a simple suite of finishes including polished concrete, timber strip flooring, corian and mirrored walls. Extensive joinery installations in a range of colours add to the home’s functionality whilst the internal custom built steel stair case with its electrostatic paint finish and unique floor-to-ceiling rod balustrade create a dramatic link between the three levels.

Externally, extensive use of sandstone cladding and paving pay homage to the heritage status of the original house and the stained timber eaves create a soft link between the old and new. Huge steel framed windows, frameless glass louvers and strategically placed skylights ensure the home is bathed in natural light whilst the new pool, deck and pergola create a comfortable external playground overlooking the surrounding landscape.
