Follow us on Google News

Surfing is an amazing outdoor sport loved by all who love the water and crave for the exhilarating thrill of rising above the element. However, if it is your maiden attempt to sea-surf right after your surfing lessons, the last thing you want is to surf at a beach with huge waves that you can’t handle.  Naturally, you will want a beach that will ease you into surfing and give you confidence.  Here are some of the beginner’s beaches around Melbourne;

Beaches suitable for Beginner Surfers

Anglesea Surf Beach

This semi-enclosed beach is protected from the winds and has small gentle waves that are not threatening to the beginners. It is also relatively shallow so that the undercurrents cannot drag around the beginner who is trying to retain his balance over the moving board.

Urquhart’s Bluff

This beach is located slightly down the Great Ocean Road and is conducting a popular ‘Go Ride a Wave’ surfing lessons. In this beach, however, you have to tackle choppy water and strong undercurrents.

Torquay Surf Beach

This is the most popular of the three. In summer, the pros enjoy this beach too and they keep to areas where the biggest waves break. The middle of the beach is suitable for beginners.

Beaches suitable for the experienced Surfers

Alternatively, the experienced surfers need more thrill at the hands of strong powerful waves with plenty of speed to soar above them. Here are some of the best beaches for the seasoned wave riders.

Easter Reef, Great Ocean Road

The Easter Reef is for the experienced surfers only, as waves get massive and powerful with a steep jacking take off at times. Surfing is best here when there is a north-east wind when the waves are said to be 20 feet or higher.

Bells Beach, Torquay

Bells Beach, the site of the country’s oldest and most professional surf competition, is regarded as the home of Australian surfing. The Southern Ocean swells of Bells Beach have the potential of soaring 5 or more metres above the shoreline. The prime time to surf here is when there are south-western swell and north-western winds.
