Walking Trails on Kangaroo Island

Follow us on Google News

Remote coastlines, vast national parks, seasonal waterfalls, and fresh, fresh air beckon active types to the jewel of South Australia, Kangaroo Island.

Kangaroo Island makes for the perfect destination for those who enjoy exploring on foot with its many, many hiking trails winding along quiet and rugged coastlines, through dense bush and beside sandy shores. With its varying terrain, Kangaroo Island has trails to suit every walking ability, and if you’re after an active break then you’ll certainly find it on the Island.

Walking Trails on Kangaroo Island

Most trails (32 of them) are in conservation parks where habitat is set aside for nature and the trails allow you to share space with wildlife. Imagine an echidna train passing by, a whale sheltering with its calf below a cliff, a sea-eagle catching a fish. Imagine not seeing another person for the whole day, the reward of an azure sea view, and a picnic on an empty beach. Sound idyllic to you? These are just a handful of experiences to be had whilst walking on Kangaroo Island.

When we say walking trails, we don’t just mean a casual couple of kilometres, no, on Kangaroo Island you can literally walk for days, exploring the vast island on foot.

In fact, the KI Wilderness Trail from Flinders Chase Visitor Centre to Kelly Hill Visitor Centre is a 5-day, 61km trail which connects existing paths with 40km of new trail through the botanically unique area in all of South Australia before reaching the rugged, remote and spectacular coastline of the Southern Ocean.

It’s best in milder months between April and September so if you’re planning a trip soon, bare this trail in mind. However, if you do just simply want to spend a morning or afternoon hiking then there are shorter loops with equally spectacular views to encounter.

Walking trails on Kangaroo Island – benefits of exploring on foot

The benefits of exploring on foot are that you’re able to take your time with photo opportunities or simply taking in a view to remember – and of course – walking’s pretty quiet and slow paced, so you’re also more likely to see a bit more wildlife.

Walking Trails on Kangaroo Island – what to expect

If you do decide to walk on the wild side, then it’s important to make sure you’re prepared, and that means sunscreen, a hat, waterproofs and plenty of water – that way you’re prepared for both the blazing Aussie sun as well as being on an island in the Great Southern Ocean – the weather can be changeable!
